Trust in the Tenant-Landlord Relationship

By May 23, 2022Tenants

There’s a certain level of trust necessary in any tenant-landlord relationship. You are trusting that they will keep the property in good condition, make any necessary repairs, and not try to take advantage of you. In return, you should always be respectful of your landlord and their property.

Communication is key in any relationship, and the tenant-landlord relationship is no different. If you have any concerns or problems with the property, be sure to let your landlord know. By building a foundation of trust and communication, both parties can enjoy a peaceful and successful tenancy. After all, both want what’s best for the property and its inhabitants!

  • The most obvious trust-building habit is to pay your rent on time. Landlords depend on rent to cover their expenses which might include mortgage payments, employee pay and benefits, insurance, etc. Providing excuses for late payments each month reduces trust and may make a landlord less lenient when an actual financial situation arises.
  • Honesty through the application and rental agreement process is vital. Being upfront about pets, roommates and rental history will get the relationship started on the right foot. If a landlord discovers intentional errors, an undisclosed pet or damage to the rental space, the landlord may be within his rights to terminate the agreement.
  • Your landlord wants to build a positive relationship with you. Be friendly to your neighbors and the landlord’s staff! This is the easiest way to build trust and establish a peaceful and amicable living situation.

Trust is key in any relationship, and it’s certainly no different when it comes to the tenant-landlord dynamic. By being on time with rent payments, honest and friendly, you can help foster a trusting relationship with your landlord that will make life easier for everyone involved.
