Tips for Renters During COVID-19

By April 21, 2020Tenants

With the persistent presence of COVID-19 causing a stay at home order for the state of Minnesota, many aspects of daily life feel uncertain right now. We’re all spending more time at home, and there are components of that which may add more stress than usual.

As a team of property management experts, G&H Management understands what it means to rent, and more importantly, how to rent happily. We know that may feel impossible right now, but we want to share some tips and need-to-know information for all of our renters out there during this pandemic.

Stay safe and healthy, everyone.

  • Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if certain aspects of your living situation are currently unclear to you. Better to ask than to be confused further down the line, especially because the status of the stay at home order could still be subject to change.
  • Communicate with your landlord/management team often. This step goes hand-in-hand with asking questions and staying alert. As a renter, you have a right to know if any changes are occurring in your building due to the COVID-19 crisis. Your landlord and management team should be conveying these to you.
  • Review your lease. As a renter, you most likely remember reviewing your lease prior to signing it. During times of uncertainty like we are currently facing, it is important to re-familiarize yourself with the terms of your lease. By doing this, you may find answers to many of your questions. If more arise while reading your lease, you can direct them to your management team or landlord from there.
  • Make a plan. We understand that right now, it can be difficult to think past your day-to-day routine. However, it is important to have a plan of action. What this looks like can be completely different depending on the person. Maybe your personal plan revolves around food or medicinal supplies, or perhaps it revolves around caring for a loved one. Make sure your living space is in order prior to making substantial adjustments elsewhere in your life, which will allow for some stability.
